How ozone odour treatment works, and how it is done safely
Short answer: Ozone (O3) is a reactive form of oxygen. It breaks down the odour molecules from smoke, pets, chemicals and mould by oxidizing them. To be done safely, treatment happens only when no people, pets or plants are inside. The space is sealed while the generator runs, and afterward it is vented until ozone is below 0.03 ppm before anyone goes back in.
How it works
An ozone generator turns oxygen in the air into ozone. The ozone reaches surfaces and porous materials and reacts with odour compounds, changing them so they no longer smell. Ozone then breaks down back into oxygen over time and with ventilation.
Safety steps
- No occupants: people, pets and plants are removed before treatment.
- The space is closed off and signed for the length of the treatment.
- Afterward, it is ventilated and the ozone level is checked. Re-entry is allowed only once ozone is below 0.03 ppm.
- The source of the odour is cleaned or removed first. Ozone does not replace cleaning.
Where it is used
We use it in homes, rentals, commercial spaces, and vehicles, boats and RVs for smoke, pet, chemical/VOC and musty odours. See odour abatement.
Frequently asked questions
Is ozone treatment safe for my family?
Yes, when it is done properly: no one is inside during treatment, and the home is vented until ozone is below 0.03 ppm before re-entry.
Does ozone kill mould?
Ozone is used for odour. Mould growth is removed physically under containment. Ozone does not replace remediation.
How long until we can go back in?
It depends on the size of the space and the treatment. You can go back in once ventilation brings ozone below 0.03 ppm.
