Odours we treat in vehicles, boats and RVs
Enclosed spaces like cars, trucks, boats and RVs hold on to odours. Upholstery, carpet, headliners, cushions and ventilation ducts absorb odour compounds, so air fresheners and sprays usually only mask the smell for a few days. We treat:
- Tobacco and cannabis smoke from previous owners or long-term use
- Pet odours from dogs, cats and accidents
- Musty and mildew odours in boats, RVs and campers that were stored damp or closed up over winter
- Spills and food odours after the source has been cleaned
- Chemical and “new” smells from interior materials and cleaning products
How the treatment works
- Assessment. We talk through what you’re smelling, where it’s strongest, and how long it’s been there. If there is active mould growth or ongoing water getting in, that needs to be dealt with first, because ozone treats odour. It does not replace cleaning or repairs.
- Source removal. Ash, debris, pet hair and soiled items are removed, and surfaces are cleaned so the odour source isn’t left behind.
- Ozone treatment. The vehicle, cabin or coach is closed up with an ozone generator running inside. Ozone is a reactive form of oxygen. It reaches fabrics, foam and air spaces and oxidizes the odour molecules so they no longer smell.
- Ventilation. Afterward, the space is aired out until ozone breaks back down into oxygen and is below 0.03 ppm. Only then is it ready to use.
Strong or long-standing odours, especially heavy smoke, can need more than one treatment. We’ll tell you honestly what to expect before we start.
Safety
Nobody stays inside during treatment: no people, no pets and no plants. The vehicle or vessel is kept closed while the generator runs and is ventilated before anyone goes back in. Remove anything you don’t want treated, such as food, medication and personal items, before we start. For boats and RVs, let us know about propane appliances, batteries and anything that should stay switched off.
What to have ready
- Personal belongings, car seats and loose items removed
- Access to the vehicle, boat or RV, and its keys
- A location with room to air it out afterward
- Details of the odour: what it is, how long it’s been there, and anything already tried
Ozone treatment for homes and buildings is covered on our odour abatement page, and our guide explains how ozone treatment works.
Frequently asked questions
Can you remove cigarette smoke smell from a car?
Yes. We clean out the source, such as ash and residue, then treat the interior with ozone and ventilate it. Heavy, long-term smoke odour may need more than one treatment.
Is ozone safe for my vehicle's interior?
Ozone is used for a limited treatment time with nobody inside, and then the space is ventilated until ozone is below 0.03 ppm. We'll talk through your vehicle before treating it.
Do you treat boats and RVs with musty odours?
Yes. Musty odours in boats and RVs often come from moisture. We'll check for active mould or leaks first, since those need to be fixed for the odour to stay gone.
